CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival got underway on Monday with the announcement of the Monticello Cup Awards.
This is the 28th annual Monticello Cup Wine Competition, and King Family Vineyards took home the top prize with its 2016 Mountain Plains.
"I'm proud to be a winemaker in the Monticello AVA and to have the opportunity to work among some of the most talented and passionate in the industry," said Matthieu Finot, the winemaker at King Family Vineyards. "Being able to accept the Monticello Cup for King Family Vineyards is an honor and I would like to give the credit to David and Ellen King, who started the vineyard 20 years ago and made all of this possible."
Twenty wineries from the Monticello Wine Trail competed in the cup, which is between wineries in the Monticello American Viticultural Area.
All of the wines entered have to contain at least 85 percent fruit from the Monticello AVA and be produced by a member of the wine trail.
The other two reds in the Top 3 Red category were Keswick Vineyards' 2016 Signature Series Cabernet Franc and Veritas Vineyard and Winery's 2016 Vinters Reserve.
The Top 3 Whites were King Family Vineyards' Small Batch Series Viognier, Stinson Vineyards' Petit Manseng, and Trump Winery's 2010 Brut Reserve.
There were six other Gold winners, including Afton Mountain Vineyards' 2016 Tradition, Barboursville Vineyards' 2016 Cabernet Franc Reserve, Cardinal Point Winery's 2017 Clay Hill Cabernet Franc, Grace Estate Winery's 2015 Colonel Richard Tannat, Pollak Vineyards' 2016 Merlot Reserve, and Stinson Vineyards' 2017 Sauvignon Blanc.
There were 32 Silver awards presented to Afton Mountain Vineyards' 2017 Chardonnay Estate Reserve, Barboursville Vineyards' 2017 Fiano, Chestnut Oak Vineyard's 2016 Chestnut One, Delfosse Vineyards and Winery's 2016 Grand Cru Reserve, Flying Fox Vineyards' 2016 Petit Verdot, Flying Fox Vineyards' 2014 Trio, Glass House Winery's 2017 Cabernet Franc, Glass House Winery's 2013 Bellezza, Grace Estate Winery's 2017 First Baron Sauvignon Blanc, Grace Estate Winery's 2017 Ice Wine, Jefferson Vineyards' 2014 Estate Reserve, Jefferson Vineyards' 2017 Jefferson Estate Reserve, Keswick Vineyards' 2017 Touriga Estate Reserve, King Family Vineyards' 2015 Brut Blanc de Blanc, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards' 2017 Viognier, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards' 2017 Chardonnay Reserve, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards' 2014 Pippin Hill Petit Verdot, Pollak Vineyards' 2016 Meritage, Pollak Vineyards' 2016 Petit Verdot, Reynard Florence Vineyard's 2016 Recherché, Stinson Vineyards' 2015 Meritage, Thatch Winery's 2018

There were also 11 Bronze awards for Afton Mountain Vineyards' 2016 Bacco, Barboursville Vineyards' 2017 Chardonnay Reserve, Cardinal Point Winery's 2017 Riesling, Chestnut Oak Vineyard's 2017 Euclid, Delfosse Vineyards and Winery's 2014 Screaming Hawk Meritage, Delfosse Vineyards and Winery's 2015 Merlot, Flying Fox Vineyards' 2015 Trio, Jefferson Vineyards' 2017 Viognier, Reynard Florence Vineyard 2017 Chardonnay Reserve, Veritas Winery's 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, and White Hall Vineyards' 2017 Riesling.
The Monticello Wine Trail is a subsidiary of the Jeffersonian Wine Grape Growers Society, which is an association of 33 wineries located in the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Nelson, and Orange.
