Municipal band seeking community help to get challenge grant

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville Municipal Band has received a challenge grant from the Perry Foundation.

The $15,000 grant will support the Foundations for the Future Campaign, a capital improvement project for the Municipal Art Center.

The campaign covers interior and exterior improvements such as a new HVAC system, flooring, computer systems, paving and signage.

The center, which is owned and operated by the Charlottesville Municipal Band, was built in 1999 and now is used by name groups for rehearsals, workshops, events, meetings and public performances.

It also houses the band's administrative offices, instrument storage and music library.

The grant comes following a competitive applications and review process, and it requires organizations to provide a dollar-for-dollar match to receive the money.

The band is now asking for community help to raise enough money to get the grant.

It is also getting ready for another season of free shows, including three that will take place at the Paramount Theatre on July 2, 16 and 30.
