CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People parking in the Market Street parking garage will have to pay in a new way come Monday.
The city of Charlottesville says the new parking access and revenue collection system at the garage will begin operations that day.
According to a release, the existing equipment has exceeded its useful life and is being replaced with technology at the current standard for parking garage operations.
When going to park, drivers will take a ticket upon entering the garage and then pay at an automated pay station before leaving. The pay station will accept cash or credit card and exact change will not be required.
The release says the cashiers will become parking ambassadors who will be available to guide people using the pay stations and provide directions to businesses and events nearby.
Those who have monthly passes will not see any change in their process, and the existing hang tags or passes will continue to work the same way.
The release adds the parking rates will be unchanged at $2 an hour, but fees will now be charged in half hour increments. The first hour at both the Market Street and Water Street parking garages will still be free.
The city says businesses will still be able to provide complimentary parking through the validation program. Customers will now be given a second "chaser" ticket to scan that will cover part or all of their parking fee.
The new system will go into effect at the Water Street parking garage on June 24.
