Northam declares State of Emergency ahead of winter storm

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Governor Ralph Northam declared a State of Emergency Saturday for the Commonwealth of Virginia ahead of a winter storm, which is expected to bring ice, snow and high winds.

This will likely result in downed trees, power outages, and transportation impacts.

The executive order is used to help Virginia mitigate any damage caused by this weekend's storm and streamline the process that the Commonwealth uses to provide assistance to localities and communities impacted by the storm.

The order will be in effect until Feb. 12 unless sooner amended or rescinded by a further executive order.
