Officer-involved shooting kills one in Rockingham County

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- For the second time in a month, the Virginia State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Rockingham County.

According to police, this incident occurred Sunday around 9:15 p.m. on the 19000 block of Mechanicsville Road.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and the Timberville Town Police Department responded to reports of a person firing a gun.

When they arrived at the home, they going to attempt to enter it, but they found a man identified as 41-year-old Johnny W. Dellinger, Jr outside.

Police say Dellinger walked around an outbuilding and began approaching the officers in what was perceived as a threatening manner.

Officials say he refused to comply with commands to stop and the officers fired at him.

Life-saving measures were attempted on Dellinger, but officials say he died at the scene.

His remains have been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for an autopsy.

A weapon was found at the scene as well.

No other people were injured in the incident.

When VSP completes its investigation into this incident, the information will be turned over to Rockingham County Commonwealth's Attorney Marsha Garst to see if any charges will be filed.
