According to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia, 43-year-old Ronald S. Sanchez of Oklahoma died of injuries he sustained during the alleged attack on May 11.

A man from Massachusetts, 30-year-old James Jordan, is facing charges connected to the incident.

Officials say he attacked hikers on the trail with a machete after behaving oddly and then threatening to harm them in their campsite.

A woman who was with Sanchez, and who has not been identified, also suffered serious injuries and was still in the hospital on Monday.

Two other hikers were able to escape without injuries.

A judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for Jordan.

Officials say the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
