Peace Poles suggested to replace local war memorials

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- For the past year, there has been a lot of talk of what to do with the Robert e. Lee statue and other monuments around town.

After what happened last weekend, a local resident is hoping to honor Heather Heyer and promote love with peace poles.

David Swanson is leading the charge against the war memorials in Charlottesville, and he wants them replaced.

"Any sort of marker that indicates we actually like peace as much is a war would be a huge improvement for Charlottesville," said Swanson. "I framed it around the idea of peace pole because it's a commonly known and it's easy and inexpensive way to put up a monument."

Swanson thinks the peace pole should be somewhere downtown like Emancipation Park or the Downtown Mall.

More than 10,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Charlottesville City Council to allow a peace memorial.
