People donate school supplies during Back to School Bash

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Families came out to the Back to School Bash at Fifth Street Station on Saturday morning to donate school supplies for children.

Backpack Buddies, a local organization, provides students with backpacks full of notebooks, pencils and crayons for the start of the school year.

The organization was founded in 2010 by Lucia Hoerr. Since then, it has been able to donate more than 2,800 backpacks for students in Central Virginia.

Carson Hoerr, Lucia's father, said Backpack Buddies is trying to fill and deliver its largest goal.

"This year, we'll fill and donate about 700 fully-loaded backpacks through several local charities to needy kids here in town and Central Virginia," he said.

Hoerr said Backpack Buddies will be filling up backpacks with school supplies until Aug. 15.
