CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- A local organization is promoting awareness of women that work in the construction industry.

The Associated General Contractors of Virginia, Piedmont District, or AGCVA, held a breakfast meeting Thursday at the Omni Hotel.

A panel made up of women working in the industry held the discussion, talking about the barriers and opportunities within the field in the area.

Each one gave accounts of their own personal experiences as women in construction.

"I've seen an increase in the percentages of women working at my own company and at many other companies that I work with, so I would say that the rate is increasing," said Mindy Colden, the director of Project Management at AGCVA.

She adds she believes there are more perceived barriers to the construction industry than there actually are.

Colden says she would hate to see women not consider position that are open to them in the industry.
