RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Virginia is recognizing Virginia Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day this week.

Governor Ralph Northam issued a proclamation Monday declaring the week of May 12 as Virginia Police week. May 15 will be Peace Officers Memorial Day.

“I am proud to recognize the brave and selfless service of Virginia's law enforcement officers who face countless risks in the line of duty each and every day,” said Northam. “In observing Virginia Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day, we also honor the memories of fallen officers and express out gratitude for the tremendous sacrifices made by officers and their families in order to protect our communities and ensure our Commonwealth remains a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”

There are about 22,500 people serving as law enforcement officers across the Commonwealth.

The Virginia State Police reported one line of duty death of an officer in 2018, and the Officer Down Memorial Page says 163 were killed across the United States last year.

Other data shows more than 1,400 officers in Virginia were victims of offenses that ranged from simple assault to aggravated assault.
