ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- UPDATE: The pipe replacement project on Route 250 in Albemarle County is complete. The road is open to traffic.
Part of Route 250 in Albemarle County is closed Wednesday and Thursday as the Virginia Department of Transportation works to replace a large pipe.
Route 250 at Route 676, or Tilman Road, is closed from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday.
Crews are excavating soil, removing the old pipe and installing a new pipe. Then they will back-fill the area and resurface the road.
Will Merritt from VDOT said it was best to close the entire road while the pipe is being replaced.
"There are several reasons we decided to close the road. The first one is safety so we don't have traffic traveling in a lane while we're working in a lane to our right digging a deep hole down to get to the pipe. The second reason is weather. We're working against the weather, there's some rain in the forecast," Merritt said.
The road closure is scheduled to avoid morning rush hour on both Wednesday and Thursday, but it will affect the Wednesday evening rush hour.
VDOT is encouraging drivers to take Interstate 64 or Morgantown Road as a detour.
