Ruckersville students participate in kindness challenge

GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Students and teachers at Ruckersville Elementary School are participating in a Kindness Challenge for Valentine's Day.

Students are completing acts of kindness that are posted on Bingo Boards around the school. Such acts could be holding the door for someone, helping a younger student, inviting someone to sit with them, or others.

The school says, as students complete their acts, they post them on hearts and stick the hearts to the Bingo Boards.

The goal for the month is to complete 1,000 acts of kindness.

“We want students to become more aware of how to treat one another with kindness and step into another's shoes,” said Assistant Principal Martina Carroll. “We are trying to build empathy and communications skills.”

Fourth- and fifth-grade students also got Random Acts of Kindness cards, and each student who gets one of these cards needs to complete a random act of kindness toward a peer.

Teachers and staff are also participating by writing notes to the student about something that made them proud about how the student acted.
