MADISON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia Sheriff's Institute will be awarding scholarships to students who are looking to study criminal justice.
The scholarship can be used at any school in Virginia.
Last year, 71 students were given scholarships to pursue higher education.
Madison County Sheriff Erik Weaver said there is an urgent need to get more people into law enforcement, and the scholarship can get more people into the field.
"We think it's a great opportunity for small town Madison to go through the Virginia Sheriff's Institute and give them some funding," said Weaver. "We need more and more law enforcement everyday and its free money for them. All they have to do is apply."
The deadline to apply is May 1 and the winners will be announced by the beginning of June.
