Board directs superintendent to review school name policy

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- During a work session Thursday night, the Albemarle County School Board approved an item that would direct Dr. Matthew Haas, superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools, to review their current policy of naming school buildings and facilities.

This process means the superintendent is expected to review the naming of all schools in the county's division.

Haas is also expected to take into account how those names designated for the schools align with the values of the school division.

The discussion was brought up last week during a school board meeting when Kate Acuff, chair for the school board, put in a motion to rethink the name of Paul Cale Elementary School because of it's affiliation to someone with a racist past.

Haas is expected to report back to the school board with his recommendations within six months.
