CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- It's the same thing every year: “new year, new me.” But why wait until the new year to start setting simple goals for yourself that you can achieve while celebrating the holidays?
Kelli Hughes, a registered dietician at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, says getting ahead on your resolutions with balance and planning is the best way to kick off the new year.
It can be hard to resist all of the sweet treats and festive drinks around this time of year, but there are some ways to enjoy the holiday goodies while also setting yourself up for success going into the new year.
Hughes says the first step to reaching your goals is to create a plan for yourself.
"We do a lot of hope dieting going into the new year. And when I say hope diet I mean, I hope I'm going to lose weight, I hope I'm going to get enough protein and exercise, but we don't do a lot of planning,” she said. “So, I think planning is the best way to make it happen."
It is also important to be mindful of what you are eating and drinking.
"Stick with spending your calories on what you really love,” Hughes said. “Maybe it's that super special Christmas cookie, or grandma's eggnog, or whatever it is that you really enjoy at the holidays that you only eat them at the holidays, and you save your special calories for that."
Hughes says staying hydrated can also be a key factor in helping you reach your goals.
Many people may think they are hungry when they are actually thirsty, which can cause overeating. Another good way to combat that is by tracking what you consume and your exercise.
"Goals have to be realistic or you're not going to achieve them,” Hughes said. “So, maybe it looks like 20 minutes, three days a week. But set yourself up for success, and then you'll move from there."
Keep it simple and stay away from those fad diets that seem too good to be true, and you will start seeing those results you want.
