FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Six boats were destroyed by a fire in Lake Monticello at Dock 4 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lake Monticello Homeowner's Association reported that the fire started on a docked boat, leaving another boat and the dock partially damaged.
Dozens of residents visited the dock after the fire was contained, including Kirk Dunklee.
Dunklee came to the scene to check on his friend's boat but had to deliver the tough news to his friend over the phone.
"Him and his wife are in New York and I've been on their boat a number of times here," said Dunklee. "I came over to find out, hopefully, it wasn't going to be their boat that was destroyed and lo and behold, it's gone."
His friend's boat didn't survive the flames, but John Ballaron was thankful to see his boat at the dock.
"We've only been here at Beach 4 for two weeks. I moved my boat down from the main marina," said Ballaron. "It was just a breath of relief to see it there still floating."
Lake Monticello Police Chief Tom Boisvert said the recovery process is only beginning.
He said they're still working to contact the owners of the boats for them to contact their insurance companies.
"Well, slips are a sign. We're going to know who the owners are. We have a marina working on that right now," said Boisvert. "We're going to notify everybody and the insurance companies and our insurance company will kick in for the dock repair."
As a resident of Lake Monticello for 19 years, Dunklee said he's never seen anything like this before, but said this will not impact his decision to take more boat trips on the lake.
No one was injured during the fire.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
