Size, weight matter in protecting vehicle occupants

GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- When it comes time for a new driver to buy that first car, many young people and their parents go for something that may be considered cute and inexpensive. In other words, they go for a smaller car.

However, in terms of safety, that is a mistake.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, in Green County, recently conducted a pair of front-to-front crash tests to demonstrate what happens to small cars and minicars, event newer ones with excellent safety ratings, when they collide with larger vehicles from the same manufacturer.

The results show the importance of size and weight when it comes to protecting the occupants of a vehicle.
