NELSON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Wednesday's light snow will help to bring excitement to winter sports activities just in time for the opening of the slopes at Wintergreen Resort.
Wintegreen Resort had two inches of natural snowfall Wednesday morning. Other parts of Central Virginia experienced some snow also.
The closer you got the mountains, the snow had a better chance of sticking to grassy surfaces.
Parts of the mountains and Nelson County had snow sticking to the roads.
An early December snowfall helps Central Virginian residents get in the snow sports mindset just in time for Wintergreen to get set to open.
For the last week and a half, officials have been using the snow guns to create fresh powder on the slopes.
On Wednesday, Wintergreen announced that Dec. 7, 8 and 9 will be opening weekend.
This year will be a little bit sooner than in years past, says Zachary Marlowe, Director of Mountain Operations.
"This Friday, we're having an exclusive opening for our members, our season pass holders and our resort guests," said Marlowe."This Saturday, we'll be open to the public nine to five and we'll be open through the rest of the season."
Since last winter, Wintergreen has been making a few exciting changes and additions including renovations, a new lodge and a growing ski inventory.
"We've been doing a lot of work to our buildings and our facilities, we've got a new member locker facility," added Marlowe.
