Square dancing flash mob briefly takes over the Downtown Mall

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- The Charlottesville Downtown mall looked a little different for a Friday evening.

"We are doing a flash mob," said Ashby Brown, one of the flash mob organizers. "We want to get people square dancing."

The flash mob started just before 6 p.m., and included dancers from all over the area.

"People are coming from places like Virginia Beach, Greene County, and Fluvanna County,' said Brown. "Some people are coming from Richmond."

Square dancing can be described as a type of country dance that involves people grouping up in couples and moving according to the commands given by a caller.

"I hope they see how much fun it is. As you're learning, you're moving, but you are having a great time," said Brown. "It keeps your mind going, it keeps your body going, and you're meeting a lot of different people."

After the flash mob finished the routine, the dancers invited onlookers to join in.

"I was just walking and they told me to get in there, and I was like alright," said Marie Scott, a 17-year-old student at St. Anne's Belfield School.

According to people square dancing for the first time, the dance is fun, but hard.

"[The dance instructors] are like 60 to 80 years old, but they are better than me in every aspect," said Scott. "It was weird at first, but I liked it. I hope we can do something like that at prom."

The dancers provided square dancing lessons for about an hour. Organizers say that they hope to see the many people who joined in at square dancing events later on in the year.

"They can come for free, and do some basic square dancing," said Brown.

"It's no dougie, but it's fun," said Scott.
