Lovingston man facing murder charge after body found near mall

LOVINGSTON, Va, (CBS19 NEWS) The Virginia State Police says a Nelson County man has been arrested for the death of a Charlottesville man.

According to police, 34-year-old Roger D. Beverly of Lovingston has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing a body.

Police say the Nelson County Sheriff's Office received a call shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday about a body found off a path behind a shopping center on Callohill Drive.

Officials found the remains of 48-year-old Winfred W. Watson shortly after arriving at the scene.

Beverly was found hiding in some nearby trees after deputies created a description from witness statements.

An investigation found the two men had gotten into an argument that led to a physical altercation. This ended after Watson was stabbed multiple times and then set on fire.

Officials recovered a knife at the scene.

Additional charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

Beverly is being held without bond at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.
