SWEET BRIAR, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- High school girls from across the country are being invited to participate in an annual summer course on engineering design.
Sweet Briar College will be hosting its Summer Explore Engineering Design Course beginning on July 29.
Students will design and build engineering projects and meeting with engineering professionals to find out what it's like to work in various industry sectors during the course.
The Explore Engineering series was launched in 2008, and it remains a week-long, pre-college, for credit course.
Participants will work with faculty and engineering majors, learning skills like brainstorming and prototyping; circuits, sensors and motor basics; machine shop and hand-tool basics; Arduino programming basics; and working effectively as a team.
This year, students will be designing and building interactive, computer-controlled sound-making systems and testing sustainably sourced concrete mixes for use in water filtration.
Course participants will stay in residence halls at Sweet Briar, tour a local engineering company, and take part in a panel session with SBC engineering alumnae.
Applications received by April 1 will get priority.
There is a non-refundable $200 deposit required at registration, and the total participant cost is $950, which includes meals lodging, supplies, and tuition, due on May 15.
There is also a limited number of need-based, half-tuition scholarships available.
