CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Senior Center is moving on and up, with a giant new facility and a new name.
The new $24 million facility is located about a mile and a half from the current location on Hillsdale Drive. It's now called the Center at Belvedere.
A groundbreaking was held to celebrate the start of a new era for the center that's been engaging seniors since 1960.
Not only is there a change of location, but the center is dropping the word senior from its name.
Executive Director Peter Thompson says the center will continue to focus on older adults, people aged 50 and better.
"What we know is that older adults benefit from engaging with people of all ages," he said. "And people from all ages benefit from integrating with older adults, so we do feel the Center at Belvedere will be one of the best places in town for people of all ages, all backgrounds, economic capacity etc."
The 48,000-foot facility will include a performing arts auditorium, an equipped fitness area, a cafe, and a Sentara Martha Jefferson primary care clinic.
The Center at Belvedere will be open by the spring of 2020.
