Thousands turn out for candlelit march on UVA Grounds

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- A crowd of thousands packed the University of Virginia Grounds on Wednesday to walk from Nameless Field to the Rotunda with candles.

Marchers said this was about taking back Grounds after an alt-right protest on Friday night, which followed the same route. But community members and students gathered together to make a statement after the violence last weekend.

"What happened on Friday night was a tragedy and we're here to take back the Lawn for this student generation, all the previous, all the future generations of students who walked the Lawn," Jerry Conner said, who participated in the march. "The Lawn stands for liberty, equality, justice and freedom."

The crowd sang late into the night with "The Good Ole Song" sung several times. People left their candles by the Thomas Jefferson statue outside the Rotunda as they left.
