Three arrested for distributing child pornography

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Albemarle County Police Department says three men are facing charges for distributing child pornography.

According to a release, detectives with the Cybercrime's Unit arrested the men during the past week as part of an investigation targeting people who use the Internet to prey on and exploit children.

Thirty-seven-year-old Darren K. Mathis of Crimora, 38-year-old Derek S. Hanger of Lyndhurst and 30-year-old Malcolm W. Dunn of Rural Retreat are each facing five felony counts of distribution of child porn.

The investigation was conducted in cooperation with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, the Wythe County Sheriff's office and the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

The ACPD is part of the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Officials would like to encourage parents to be proactive when it comes to Internet safety and their children.

They suggest talking with children about what they enjoy doing online, keeping the computer in the family room or another high-traffic area of the home, spending time with the child while on the computer and seeing what sites they like to visit, and periodically checking the computer's browser history, especially recently or frequently visited sites.
