UVA honors the memory of a fallen student

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Hundreds of members of the University of Virginia community came together on Sunday to honor the life of one of their own.

Rehan Baddeliyanage died while hiking in Puerto Rico during spring break.

Friends of Baddeliyanage remember him as a friend who was always there for others and to push them out of their comfort zones.

"To me, he was truly a person that bridged gaps that built communities around him and in between his friends," said Nikhith Kalkunte, a fellow student.

Kalkunte says he will remember his friend for the incredible amount of things he did during his four years on Grounds.

"Rehan, by himself, was involved in a lot of different things, housing residence life, university guide service, he was an engineer," said Kalkunte. "I think at UVA it's really easy to get wrapped into those different communities and be content with what's within. Rehan was really the guy to step out of those things and bring those things together."

The message spread throughout the ceremony was that Baddeliyanage loved others, and they loved him.

A scholarship fund has been created in his memory. To donate, you can click on the link in the Related Links box.
