UVA eye clinic expands

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The University of Virginia Health System is opening an expanded eye clinic at the UVA Medical Park Northridge on Ivy Road.

The expansion is in response to an increase in population and in high-risk groups.

"We've had a tremendous increase in glaucoma and diabetes and various diseases that are found in certain parts of our population, and these are potentially blinding diseases," said Peter Netland, chair of UVA’s Department of Ophthalmology.

The expansion added nine treatment rooms, and the clinic will now offer new specialties including cornea and retinal care as well as treatment for cataracts.

Additionally, Netland said the clinic has added three doctors and will add another three next year. He said the expansion should also lead to shorter wait times, a major factor in patient satisfaction.
