UVA professors sign petition to reverse hiring of Marc Short

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Several University of Virginia professors have signed a petition trying to prevent the university from hiring a former member of the Trump administration.

UVA's Miller Center announced last week that it is hiring Marc Short, who has worked in the Trump White House and was a former chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence.

Several UVA professors, alumni, and students are criticizing this decision, citing President Donald Trump's reaction to a white nationalist rally at UVA last summer.

An online petition has gained hundreds of signatures to try to reverse Short's hiring. William Hitchcock, a professor who works with the Miller Center, signed that petition.

"The Miller Center has chosen to hire one of the most prominent spokesmen for the Trump administration and a man who personally helped to obfuscate and cover up the ambiguous statements by President Trump about the events of Aug. 11 and 12 in our community," Hitchcock said.

Officials at the Miller Center say they employ former staff members from several presidential administrations, both Republican and Democrat. They say Short is respected by people from both parties.
