Urging drivers to avoid traveling in wintry weather

By  |

CULPEPER, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Drivers are being urged to monitor their local weather forecasts as wintry weather moves across the area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says sub-freezing temperatures and the storm's timing could make travel challenging Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Snowplows have been spreading a mix of sand and salt to improve traction and melt ice that forms on roadways.

People who do have to be on the roads are asked to be extra cautious, slow down, and increase distances between vehicles.

However, anyone who does not need to be on the roads is asked to avoid all travel if possible.

Interstates and primary highways will be addressed first by VDOT crews.
