VDOT gears up for winter storm

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation is gearing up for what could be significant snowfall this weekend.

VDOT spokesperson Will Merritt says the state agency is monitoring the forecast to determine staffing levels for the weekend weather event.

On Friday, VDOT crews were already out pre-treating Albemarle County roads with brine to make clearing snowfall easier.

Merritt says the storm's impact on the Charlottesville area is still unpredictable, but VDOT is ready for whatever comes.

"We feel confident with where we are right now with the current forecast, but if we see that we're getting more snow down here in the Charlottesville area, we can easily ramp up our staffing plan as needed," he said.

Merritt says VDOT staff will be working 12-hour shifts through the weekend, and possibly into Monday if the conditions require it.
