Valentine’s Day candy history class

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Susan Benjamin, one of the few candy historians in the United States, gave a lecture on Valentine’s Day-themed candy history at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society on Saturday.

Guests received candy bags and were encouraged to try the vintage treats as Benjamin gave interesting context to the sweets, some of which were hundreds or even thousands of years old.

"I have this fabulous opportunity to tell people about the history of candy,” Benjamin said. “Things that they absolutely have no idea about whatsoever that flush out their perceptions of their own lives in many ways, as well as our national life. It's really fun, and it tastes good. Most of it tastes good. Not all of it."

Benjamin covered everything in her lecture from early candy aphrodisiacs to cinnamon hearts.
