CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A video started going viral on Twitter on Friday night of a white man holding a knife above a black man's head, forcing him to stay down on his knees.
The video was posted by a Twitter user at 6:09 p.m. Friday. The post has more than 5,000 retweets so far. CBS19 does not yet have permission to show the video.
However, there is a link to the original tweet located in the Related Links box.
At the end of the video, police de-escalate the scene and the man dropped the knife. Charlottesville Police Sergeant Tony Newberry said they detained the suspect who was holding the man hostage.
"Based on the information officers had at the time of the suspect's behavior, he was taken into custody under ECO for mental evaluation," said Newberry. "He was then transported to the UVA ER and ultimately committed to Western State Hospital. After further investigation and viewing video of the incident, the officers obtained a warrant for attempted malicious wounding. Service of that warrant will be coordinated between police and the hospital."
Police say additional charges are pending.
