CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity started their work to build ten new homes at the Harmony Ridge development on Fifth Street this month.
The construction is part of a partnership with the CFA Institute to build energy-efficient homes to lower costs.
Amy Allamong, volunteer program manager for Habitat for Humanity, said the construction is a special time for homeowners.
"They get to actually build their own homes and their neighbor's homes," she said. "Many of them have already met each other because Habitat has community conversations once a month, where all the neighbors meet once a month. They bring their kids, we have dinners together."
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization focused on providing people in the community decent and affordable housing.
Construction is expected to take up to a year and a half.
