Wild Wolf, Burkhart among recipients of green tourism awards

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local business and a former member of the local tourism bureau are among those being honored for commitments to sustainability and green tourism.

The Virginia Green Travel Alliance has announced its 2018 Green Travel Star and Green Travel Leader award winners.

The Virginia Green program is presenting Virginia Green Travel Star Awards to 19 tourism operations, including Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford.

Three people are being recognized with the Green Team All-Star Award, including Danny Wolf of Wild Wolf.

And Kurt Burkhart, who was the leader of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau for nine years, has been selected as the Industry Game-Changer Award recipient.

Another five businesses are being recognized with the Virginia Green Travel Leader Award.

They are being honored at the sixth annual Virginia Green Travel Conference, which is taking place Wednesday and Thursday in Harrisonburg.

The conference features educational workshops, speakers and panels as well as a green tourism business expo. Virginia's first lady Pamela Northam and Shawn Norton of the National Park Service are featured speakers.

The Virginia Green program is supported by a partnership between the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Green Travel Alliance, and the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association.

It encourages green practices in all sectors of the tourism industry in the Commonwealth and works with more than 1,800 businesses that have voluntarily certified their practices through the program.

Wild Wolf Brewing Company is the 2018 Green Travel Partner of the Year.

Other Green Travel Star Award winners include Birdsong Pleasure Garden, Full Circle Catering, Yuck Old Paint, LLC, Delaplane Cellars, Virginia Living Museum, and Kiptopeke State Park among others.

The Virginia Green Travel Leader Award winners are Back INN Time in Kilmarnock, Oak Grove Plantation Bed and Breakfast in South Boston, Mountain Song Inn in Willis, Shady Acres Bed and Breakfast in Hanover, and Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria.

The Green Team All-Star Award winners are Wolf, Perry DeMay of Virginia State Parks and Rehn West of Nauticus.
