CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- William Monroe basketball player Sam Brunelle and Western Albemarle swimmer August Lamb were named winners of CBS19's Student Athlete of the Year award for the 2018-19 school year on Thursday.
Brunelle will head to South Bend this fall to play for the 2018 NCAA Tournament Champions Notre Dame, after signing with the Fighting Irish this past November.
Brunelle leaves William Monroe as one of the most highly-decorated players in state history after being named an McDonald's All-American and the NHSCA Girl's Basketball Player of the Year. The Notre Dame signee finished her career 11th all-time on the Virginia scoring list and 6th all-time in rebounds. Brunelle also led the Dragons to the Class 3 State Semifinals this past season for the first time in program history.
Brunelle also finished high school with a 4.2 GPA. With only a couple weeks left before starting classes in mid-June at Notre Dame, Brunelle is excited for what is to come.
"Before I committed I had seen them play and I was like I want to win a national championship one year and so going to them I think that we can definitely do that," Brunelle said, "Ever since I committed, to finally get there and now I'm two weeks out from going, I'm just so excited and I know there's a lot of work to be done this summer."
Brunelle was CBS19's Student Athlete of the Week on February 21.
Lamb begins practicing with the Virginia swim and dive team next week after receiving a preferred walk-on spot, just like his older sister did before him.
In his four years swimming for the Warriors, Lamb won seven state titles as well as helping lead the boys to three team state titles. Lamb has also competed on the national level, competing in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the Junior Nationals in December.
Lamb was also a standout in the classroom, finishing with a 4.59 GPA. Now Lamb looks forward to living out the goals he set as a kid.
"Whenever I've pictured myself in college the setting has been Virginia, so it's going to be pretty cool to get a chance to swim in the AFC [Virginia Aquatics & Fitness Center] when it's not for JSL's or Ben Hair," Lamb said, "It's the realization of a dream that's been year's in the making."
Brunelle and Lamb were two of 35 student-athletes chosen from schools around the area honored by CBS19's Student Athlete of the Week program this year.
