ACC Coastal competitive 'top to bottom'

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For the first time in either ACC division, all seven Coastal teams received first place votes in the preseason media poll showing just how up for grabs the division could be in 2019.

"I think top to bottom, the Coastal division is as competitive as you're going to get," Pittsburgh Coach Pat Narduzzi said, who lead the Panthers to last season's Coastal title, "I think anybody can win it every year. I think one of the reasons I took the job at the University of Pittsburgh is because we had a chance to win a championship."

Over the past six seasons, six of the seven Coastal teams have won the division. Virginia, picked to win the Coastal in the preseason media poll with 82 votes, is the lone team without a Coastal division title.

"Any time you're part of a conference, the goal is to win the conference championship," Virginia Coach Bronco Mendenhall said, "Yes, it would be nice for us to clean up this nice little package of now us being the seventh team, the seventh different team to win the Coastal. It doesn't always work like that. That will happen when we earn it."

To compare to the Atlantic, only Clemson and Florida State have won the division since 2009, with the Tigers winning the last four. But coaches think no matter the matchup this season, it could be anyone's game.

"We can beat every team in our league and every team in our league can beat us," Miami Coach Manny Diaz said, "We've kind of proven that over the last couple years, either by who's won and lost our games or by the fact that many of them have been one possession games."
