LYNCHBURG, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- When Hugh Freeze was hired as Liberty football coach, Mike Brown was the only assistant retained. Brown was let go as running backs coach over the weekend. Bruce Johnson was hired as his replacement.
Brown spent one season at his alma mater. In that one season, Liberty rushed for 1,937 yards, the Flames best performance since 2013. Frankie Hickson rushed for a career-high 1,059 yards.
A graduate of Monticello High School, Brown was an All-American at both quarterback and wide receiver as a player for Liberty. He spent three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before transitioning into coaching, with stops at Michigan, Delaware and Western Illinois before joining Gill's staff last summer.
Johnson is the fourth running backs coach for the Flames in four years.
