Ten different Covington players had at least one hit -- including eight players with multi-hit games -- as the Lumberjacks pounded the Tom Sox 12-9 on Monday to force a deciding third game of their Valley League playoff series.
The two teams will play Game 3 on Tuesday night in Charlottesville, with the winner advancing to face Staunton in the second round of the Valley League playoffs. The Braves completed a two-game sweep of South Division regular season champion Waynesboro with a 9-2 win in Staunton on Monday.
Covington finished with 20 hits a team on Monday night, led by three apiece from Jeff Taylor and Jonathan Barditch. The Lumberjacks scored in six of their frames at the plate, including a three-run second inning to erase an early Tom Sox lead, then a two-run seventh and a four-run eighth to pull away from the Sox.
Despite the Lumberjacks' big night at the plate, the Sox had the tying run at the plate with one out in the ninth inning -- but Covington's Derek Tremblay retired Walker Imwalle and Cayman Richardson with two runners in scoring position to end the ballgame.
The Sox got a three-hit night from Thomas Francisco and a pair of hits from Trey McDyre. Austin Mueller, Dan Harwood and Brock Edge each drove in a pair of runs.
