CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Over the past seven days the Virginia basketball team rolled past Morgan State and outlasted a 7-2 VCU team to improve to 9-0 on the season. Yet on Monday, the Cavaliers dropped to their lowest national ranking of the season.
Despite those two victories, UVA fell two spots to No. 6 in the new Associated Press Top 25 on Monday afternoon. It's the first time the Wahoos have been outside the top five of the AP poll all season, after beginning the year ranked No. 5 and spending the last four weeks at No. 4.
Tennessee jumped four spots from No. 7 to No. 3 after beating previous No. 1 Gonzaga 76-73 on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell two spots to No. 3 after their first loss. Kansas (8-0) and Duke (9-1) bumped up into the top two spots, while 10-0 Michigan held at No. 5.
UVA did move up a spot to No. 3 in the new coaches poll on Monday, behind Kansas and Duke. Tennessee and Michigan round out the top five in the coaches' rankings, with Gonzaga falling from the top spot last Monday to No. 6 this week.
UVA is off for final exams until visiting South Carolina on December 19.
