CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Virginia's late inning rally in game two fell short as Duke beat the Wahoos 8-6 to sweep Sunday's doubleheader and take the first ACC series of the season.
Duke won game one 2-1 behind two sacrifice fly's in the first two innings. Virginia's lone run came across in the fourth inning when Logan Michaels sent an RBI double down the third base line, scoring Nate Eikhoff from first.
Griff McGarry, struggled early, allowing a Blue Devil on third with less than two outs in each of the three innings, but got out of a bases loaded jam in the third before settling down. McGarry allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked three.
In game two, Duke followed the home run to victory. Chris Crabtree led off the game with a solo home run to give Duke a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Matt Mervis hit a two run shot to make it 3-0 in favor of Duke.
Leading 4-1 in the seventh, Rudy Maxwell took Andrew Abbott deep with the bases loaded. The grand slam gave Duke an 8-1 lead.
Virginia got all four of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two on a Duke error. Cayman Richardson followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4. Pinch hitter Jack Weiler scored Nate Eikhoff on a base hit up the middle, making it 8-5.
With the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning, Tanner Morris popped out to end the game and the rally. Virginia fell to 8-7 on the season and dropped the first ACC series of the year.
