COLUMBIA, SC (CBS19 Sports) -- Virginia fans have endured a year of awkward questions regarding the Wahoos historic upset in 2018. There will be no such conversations after this year's first round win.
"Being on the wrong side of history once was bad enough," said Austin Higley. "Twice would have been... I don't know man. That would have been really bad."
Despite a difficult first half that saw the Cavaliers trail Gardner-Webb 36-30 at the half, Virginia pulled away for a 71-56 win. Fans admitted they suffered through a few flashbacks to last year's game in the first half, but those fears were unfounded early in the second half in a game-changing 22-5 run to give the Cavaliers the lead.
"Definitely a lot better," said Virginia fan Reid Sanders. "A year ago, it was a pretty low point. We've had a great season and have a lot longer to go this year."
"Just the fact that we pulled it out," Higley added, "I would have taken a one point win, but honestly, winning by 15, feels alright in the world."
Virginia will face Oaklahoma in the second round on Sunday.
