First half surge sends Virginia past Navy in opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Virginia trailed by three with nine minutes left in the first half, but closed the half on a 5-0 run to pull ahead and eventually top Navy 15-12 Saturday afternoon in the Wahoos season opener.

Avery Shoemaker scored scored two goals in the game-changing run and finished with four goals and three assists. The senior led eight Wahoos who finished with goals in the season opener. Nora Bowen also finished with a hat trick for Virginia.

Maggie Jackson finished with one goal and three assists for Virginia.

Charlie Campbell made her first start in goal for the Cavaliers, finishing with a career-high 12 saves. Navy stopped just four Virginia shots in the game.
