CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Right-hander Connor Gillispie became the second former Miller School baseball player drafted on Tuesday when he was taken by the Baltimore Orioles.
Baltimore selected Gillispie with the first pick of the ninth round on Tuesday, No. 258 overall. In 50 appearances over the past three seasons at VCU, including 45 starts, Gillispie has a 13-8 record and 2.82 career ERA. He finished 5-3 with a 2.50 ERA in 20 starts this spring, with 118 strikeouts and just 24 walks.
Gillispie also helped the Tom Sox win the 2017 Valley League championship, going 2-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 22 2/3 innings pitched during the regular season, then pitching 11 shutout innings in two starts during the team's playoff run.
Gillispie joins former Mavericks teammate Tanner Morris as Miller School products taken on Tuesday's second day of the MLB Draft. Morris -- a draft-eligible sophomore who spent the past two seasons as UVA's everyday shortstop -- was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in Round 5.
