HARRISONBURG, Va. (CBS19 Sports) -- A former Western Albemarle baseball player will be joining the EMU coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Eli Sumpter, a two-sport standout in baseball and basketball, will now be a grad assistant at the DIII school in Harrisonburg.

Sumpter played baseball for Roanoke, finishing with a career .320 batting average and also recording 7 saves as an infielder and reliever.

Sumpter and the Roanoke baseball team faced EMU throughout his career. EMU head coach Adam Posey noted that he admired Eli’s versatility and competitiveness as a player, and looks forward to seeing that applied to his coaching staff.

The EMU Diamond Royals begin fall season in September.
