'Hoos lose pitching recruit to Angels

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Big right-hander Jack Kohanocwicz has chosen a pro baseball career over pitching at Virginia.

Kohanowicz has signed with the Los Angeles Angels for $1.25 million, according to a tweet from Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com on Wednesday. Slot value for the No. 92 overall pick in this year's draft -- the spot in Round 3 where the Angels selected Kohanowicz -- is $637,600, according to MLB.com.

Entering the draft, the 6-6 righty from a high school near Philadelphia was ranked as the No. 61 overall prospect by Baseball America, and No. 85 overall by MLB.com.

Kohanowicz was the first of three UVA recruits selected in this year's draft. Outfielder Chris Newell, taken by the Cardinals in Round 37, has announced that he intends to play for the Cavaliers. Right-hander Jayson Hoopes was taken by the Chicago Cubs in Round 36.
