Mainieri and O'Connor speak at first VBCA Convention

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- In the 15 years since Brian O'Connor left Paul Mainieri's staff at Notre Dame and Mainieri left for LSU, Paul had never been to Charlottesville until this week.

Mainieri was the keynote speaker for the first ever Virginia Baseball Coaches Association Convention at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel. The LSU baseball coach said looking at the crowd of almost 200 coaches from all levels brought back memories.

"I look out at all these young high school coaches and I see myself a few years ago," Mainieri said, "It just seems like yesterday I was in my mid-20's, trying to make a career, trying to become as knowledgeable as I could to work with youngsters."

The event lasts through Saturday and O'Connor hopes it only continues to elevate the level of coaching across the state.

"The state of Virginia has been great for baseball and it's been great for baseball because we have really strong high school programs in our state," O'Connor said, "So I think this is just a part of continuing to grow from it. As coaches we need to learn from others, nobody has all the answers in the game of baseball."
