Miles introduced as new Eagles head coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Eric Miles as planning on being an assistant coach for the Covenant baseball team this season. Instead, he will be the head coach when the Eagles take the field for the first time on March 8.

"I really do enjoy being around the game and coaching kids at all levels," Miles said.

Former coach Chris Madison took a coaching job at a Division III school in Wisconsin and offered to put a word in for Miles to be the new head coach.

"I'm familiar with some of the players," Miles said, "and I thought it would be a great opportunity for me and the kids that are here that I already know about. Things just kind of worked out that way."

He has nearly 20 years of coaching experience, starting when his children were in t-ball. The last two summers, Miles spent coaching the American Legion Post 74 team, having immediate success, winning a state championship his first summer on the bench.

With a few players in attendance for Friday's announcement, Miles said he would meet the rest of the team at their first practice of the season. Covenant is coming off an 11-9 season that saw the Eagles advance to the VIC championship game, before losing to the Miller School.
