CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- It is officially the watch list portion of the 2019 college football preseason.
On Monday, Virginia had a pair of players on preseason watch lists released by the Maxwell Football Club. Cornerback Bryce Hall was on the preseason Bednarik Award watch list, while quarterback Bryce Perkins was on the preseason Maxwell Award watch list.
The Bednarik Award goes to the best defensive player in the country each season. Hall is back with the Wahoos after earning second-team All-America honors as a junior last season. He led the country with 22 pass break-ups, and tied for the national lead with 24 passes defended.
Since 1937, the Maxwell Award has been presented annually to the national college player of the year. In his first season as UVA's starting quarterback, Perkins set single-season school records last fall for total offense (3,603 yards) and total touchdowns (34). He threw for 2,680 yards and ran for 923 yards, joining Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray as the only players in the country with more than 2,600 passing yards and more than 900 rushing yards.
Perkins and Hall will be the two UVA players joining head coach Bronco Mendenhall later this week at the annual ACC Kickoff media event in Charlotte.
Both the Maxwell and Bednarik awards will be presented at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12. Semifinalists for both awards will be announced in late October, and three finalists a month later.
