Players with local ties on inaugural AAF rosters

SAN ANTONIO, Tx. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- The next step in quarterback Christian Hackenberg's pro football career will come with the Memphis Express of the fledgling Alliance of American Football.

Hackenberg, a product of Fork Union Military Academy who starred at Penn State and has spent time with four NFL franchises, is just one player with local ties to make a 52-man roster for one of the AAF's eight teams. The inaugural AAF season kicks off on Saturday, February 9.

Kicker Nick Novak, an Albemarle High School grad who played 10 seasons in the NFL, will be a member of the Birmingham Iron. Salt Lake Stallions linebacker Greer Martini and Atlanta Legends safety Ed Reynolds both played prep football at Woodberry Forest.

Three former UVA football players will also be members of AAF rosters when the league opens up. Defensive lineman David Dean and offensive lineman Brandon Pertile are also on the Legends roster. Offensive lineman John Montelus will play for the San Diego Fleet.
