CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Mikey Herring's six goal performance against Robert Morris came as no surprise to Matt Moore, but he was happy to see it.
"I'm glad because if we want to go far we need people like Mikey to go off for 6 goals like that," Moore said.
Herring and fellow senior Ryan Conrad combined for 11 goals, setting career-highs in Saturday's NCAA Tournament First Round win over Robert Morris. Herring says he knows games like that are only possible because of his teammates.
"I'm fortunate to play with guys like Ryan Conrad, Dox Aitken, Michael Kraus, Ian Laviano, Matt Moore they're obviously great players and it makes my job kind of easy," Herring said, "So it's really awesome everyday to come out there and play with some really great guys."
Laviano, Moore, Aitken and Kraus all rank in the ACC top-seven for goals scored this season. But on a night when the Colonials were keying in on the Cavaliers main attackers, guys like Herring and Conrad are needed.
"That's what the key is if they've got a game plan for Dox and Michael Kraus and Ian Laviano," Coach Lars Tiffany said, "Our other guys ready to step up and we certainly saw that from two fourth-years."
Moving forward Moore knows they will need more guys to break out to make Virginia even more dangerous.
"The more people that are scoring, the more depth we have defenses can't really guard that, they got to worry about seven, eight guys instead of two or three," Moore said.
Virginia will travel to Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday to take on Maryland.
