CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Tandem Friends head coach Robert Jordan sat watching film Monday afternoon as the Badgers started warming up for another day of practice. Monday's practice was also the first after finding out his team would be playing in the state tournament for the first time.

"They worked so hard throughout the season," Jordan said. "This is just one of the goals that we set for ourselves as a team."

The other goals have been met. Tandem Friends won the Delany Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

The Badgers have won the last seven DAC championships, but never earned a state tournament berth before it was announced Sunday they received a bid.

"Last year, I felt like we got a little cheated and stuff like that, but this year we came back strong," said senior guard Latrell Winkey. "We got some new guys. They came on along and we're doing everything we can to win."

The Badgers improved to 18-2 this season, beating Quantico for the DAC tournament title. Last season, Tandem missed the state tournament despite a 13-6 record.

"We had a really good season last year," Jordan said. Unfortunately, we didn't win enough non-conference games to advance on into the state tournament."

"We have matured in so many ways," Winkey added. "Our coaching staff has done such a good job with our fellows this year to prepare us for these type of games."

The Badgers travel to Life Christian on Tuesday night to open the state tournament run.

"We got to win," Jordan said. "You either win or you go home. We're going to try our best to keep our streak going."
